UPI 2.0 to Arrive in August But Without Recurring Payments Feature

The upgraded version of National Payments Corporation of India’s real-time payment system, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), will debut in August. Sources familiar with the knowledge of the new developments have revealed that the next version of UPI, dubbed UPI 2.0, will be up and ready by mid-August and will come with multiple new features.

With UPI transactions growing by over 1,000% on a YoY basis, banking institutions have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of UPI’s upgraded version to give another major push to digital payments in the country, and as per the new reports, their wait will finally come to an end two weeks from now.

How to Setup UPI Payments in Uber (Guide)

Before we look at the new features in UPI 2.0, let’s talk about a key element that will be absent from the upgraded version of the payments system i.e. recurring or standing payments. UPI 1.0 allowed users to provide an Electronic Clearing Service (ECS) mandate to banks in order to make recurring payments to merchants, however, that facility will reportedly be excluded from UPI 2.0.

It is a big miss since recurrent payments on UPI could have opened up a large chunk of new use cases and merchant payments would have picked up as well,” an executive of a payments company was quoted as saying by the EconomicTimes.

As for the new features that UPI 2.0 will bring, they are listed below:

  • There will be an option of ‘one-time’ mandate that would allow users to block a certain amount of money from being paid for a service before availing it in the first place
  • Inward remittance facility for non-resident Indians (NRIs) who want to send money to their relatives in India
  • An overdraft facility against funds available in a user’s savings account provided by the bank, thanks to an improve payments interface
  • Users will be able to view invoices before they can move forward with a transaction
  • The ability to verify QR-codes issued by small-scale merchants

As per the report, the next-gen iPhone lineup will be powered by the A14 chip that will use the 5nm technology, making it significantly more power efficient than its predecessor, the A13 Bionic, found on the current-gen iPhone 11 lineup. At least two of the three new phones will also have what the report called ‘flexible’ OLED displays, although it’s not immediately clear what it meant by that term. In addition, Apple is also developing a new ‘3D-sensing rear-camera’ that is said to be able to “sense t...
